چکیده

Wind profiles from an operational C-band Doppler radar have been combined with data from a bird tracking radar to assess the wind profile quality during bird migration. The weather radar wind profiles (WRWPs) are retrieved using the well-known volume velocity processing (VVP) technique. The X-band bird radar performed range–height scans perpendicular to the main migration direction and bird densities were deduced by counting and normalizing the observed echoes. It is found that the radial velocity standard deviation ( r) obtained from the VVP retrieval is a skillful indicator of bird migration. Using a threshold of 2 m s 1 on r, more than 93% of the bird-contaminated wind vectors are rejected while over 70% of the true wind vectors are accepted correctly. For high bird migration densities the raw weather radar wind vectors have a positive speed bias of 8.6 3.8 m s , while the quality-controlled wind vectors have a negligible speed bias. From the performance statistics against a limited area numerical weather prediction model, it is concluded that all (significant) bird contamination is removed and that high-quality weather radar wind profiles can be obtained, even during the bird migration season.

Bird migration flight altitudes studied by a network of operational weather radars

A fully automated method for the detection and quantification of bird migration was developed for operational C-band weather radar, measuring bird density, speed and direction as a function of altitude. These weather radar bird observations have been validated with data from a high-accuracy dedicated bird radar, which was stationed in the measurement volume of weather radar sites in The Netherl...

Wind observations with Doppler weather radar

Introduction Weather radars are commonly employed for detection and ranging of precipitation, but radars with Doppler capability can also provide detailed information on the wind associated with (severe) weather phenomena. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) operates two identical C-band (5.6 Ghz) Doppler weather radars. One radar is located in De Bilt and the other one is loc...

Radar wind profiler signal characteristics during bird migration episodes

The Gabor transform is used to investigate non-stationary wind profiler radar signals, which are frequently occurring during the seasonal bird migration. It is shown that the Gabor phase space representation contains a wealth of information and can be effectively used to separate the atmospheric signal component from the clutter. The crucial role of the dwell time as one of the primary sampling...

A new approach to wind turbine power generation forecasting, using weather radar data based on Hidden Markov Model

The wind is one of the most important and affecting phenomena and is known as one of the significant clean resources of energy. Apart from other atmospheric parameters, the wind has complex behavior and intermittent characteristics. Local phenomena can be accompanied by the wind, which is strong, non-predicted, and damaging.  Weather radars are capable of detecting and displaying storm-related ...

Weather and bird migration Norman Elkins

© British Birds 98 • May 2005 • 238-256 ABSTRACT Bird migration in and through Britain and Ireland shows great variation, both seasonally and annually. Much depends on atmospheric conditions, which can equally hinder and assist migration, both on a broad scale (the distribution, extent, intensity and movement of pressure patterns), and at a local level (temporal and spatial changes in wind, vis...
